On homecoming weekend, friends, family, and alumni of the program all came together to cheer on UMBC men’s rugby as they took down George Mason in their final home match of the fall.

Only a few minutes into the game, Jesse “JAM” McElree scored the first try of many for UMBC off of a chip kick. This was an early indicator of a dominant first half performance by UMBC. The forwards were solid in scrums, line-outs, and securing the ball; the backs were successful in moving the ball out wide and finishing. John McLeod, in his last home match as a UMBC rugger, scored a neat hat-trick before half-time. He was joined by Jake Rampolla, Matt Hanson, and Jesse McElree, each scoring twice. UMBC went into halftime shutting out George Mason by over 50 points.

George Mason was able to come back with a few tries of their own in the second half, taking advantage of defensive breakdowns by UMBC. This didn’t stop the boys from scoring a few more to finish out the game and celebrate the big win with all of the alumni, who came out to support the team. John McLeod added another try to his many, as did Jesse McElree. Mark Broomfield and Darian Lee each added a try to UMBC’s score.

Join us as we mark the conclusion of the regular season as the team heads down to Lexington, VA to take on Virginia Military Institute on Saturday, October 21, 2017.

Final: UMBC- 82, GMU- 24

Tries: John McLeod(4), Jesse McElree(3), Jake Rampolla(2), Matt Hanson(2), Mark Broomfield, Darian Lee
