Welcome to UMBC Rugby Alumni

It all started in November 1992 with the playing of the very first UMBC Alumni Game. It was cold that day, it snowed during the game and yes the field slanted uphill both ways. The next was held in 1994 and starting in 1996 it became a fixture in the spring calendar of UMBC. In the past guys would come to enjoy post game, then a few snack foods were brought, someone brought a bucket of fried chicken and finally somewhere in 1998-1999 things started to get more formalized. Fast forward a decade plus and what started as a Saturday afternoon has become a weekend event that includes a Hall of Fame induction, presentation of the Haud Colluni Scholarship, a fantastic post game BBQ, the Best Damn Awards in all of Rugby and the presentation of the Alumni Cup.

Saturday Rugby Matches

Join us on Walker Avenue Field for thrilling matches featuring the current UMBC Rugby teams and our alumni. Bring your energy and team spirit!

Post-Game BBQ

1:30 PM – Twilight

After the matches, enjoy a delicious BBQ with fellow alumni, players, and families. Share stories, laughs, and awards as we wrap up the weekend.

Haud Collumni Scholarship

Established in 2005 by the UMBC Alumni Association and the UMBC Rugby team, the Haud Collumni Scholarship is a trailblazing initiative—the first and only club sports scholarship at UMBC. The name "Haud Collumni," meaning steadfast and resilient, reflects the spirit of the rugby community.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Minimum GPA of 3.25
  • At least two years of active participation in the rugby club
  • Demonstrates leadership and character both on and off the field

Scholarship Fund Growth

  • 2008: $7,406.64
  • 2009: $25,910.67
  • 2010: $30,742.50
  • 2011: $32,459.45

The first Haud Collumni Scholarship was awarded in 2012 and continues to support exceptional candidates. Our ultimate goal is to establish a full team of scholarship recipients, highlighting the dedication and excellence of UMBC Rugby.

Alumni Teams

The Arbutian Revolution

Founded in 2010, the Arbutian Revolution is a dynamic group of UMBC alumni and active players who compete in 7’s tournaments to stay connected and continue their rugby legacy. The team officially adopted the name "Arbutian Revolution" in 2012 and quickly gained a reputation for competitive play.

In 2015, under the leadership of President and Co-Founder Nadir Mechanicalman, the team reached new heights by participating in multiple tournaments and bringing home trophies. Notable achievements include:

  • 5th place finish and Bowl victory in their first 2015 tournament.
  • 3rd and 5th place finishes with two teams in the same competition
  • 2nd place in a tightly contested final during a Tennessee tournament

The Arbutian Revolution continues to grow, striving for even greater success while fostering camaraderie and the spirit of rugby.

Rocky Gorge Rugby

Many UMBC Rugby alumni extend their rugby careers with Rocky Gorge Rugby Football Club, a premier team in the Mid-Atlantic region. This connection emphasizes the strong relationship between UMBC and the broader rugby community.

Rocky Gorge thrives on the collective strength and passion of its players, many of whom bring the resilience and teamwork cultivated during their time at UMBC Rugby. The club's history of national championships and consistent performance in regional leagues demonstrates its dedication to excellence.

As a dynamic club, Rocky Gorge continues to develop talent and embrace new strategies, ensuring the rugby spirit remains vibrant for players and fans alike.
